Un paseo por Monterroso - A walk in Monterroso

El Ayuntamiento de Monterroso con una extensión de 447,6 Km2 tiene algo más de 500 entidades de población. Su extensión es de 114,6 Km2 y se sitúa en el Suroeste de la provincia de Lugo. Su situación dentro de la Comunidad Autónoma de Galicia es privilegiada, situándose prácticamente en el centro de ésta.

The Council of Monterroso with an area of 447.6 km2 has just over 500 locations of people. Its area is 114.6 km2 and is situated in the southwestern of the province of Lugo. Its location into the Autonomous Community of Galicia is privileged, being practically in the center of it.

Norways group from Fredheim

The members of our Norwegian group consist of app. 10 people from 6 different countries. They have all basic knowledge of Norwegian, and five of them are already doing what we call "Language practice" out in a real job 2 times a week. That means that they are working every Tuesday and Wednesday instead of studying Norwegian at school, and by doing so, they learn words and expressions related directly to the work they do.

There are many advantages for a person doing Language practice:
- you learn more about an occupation
- you get a Norwegian network in colleagues and users
- you learn the language better
- you migth be lucky to get a paid job faster etc.

So far all five participants have got job offers beside their practice. This proves that by showing their capability, they manage to show their boss that they are good and positive workers, even with imperfect Norwegian skills (but the perfection will come!). In the future we will keep you informed about our improvement and how things work out for our participants, so please follow the blog!

Language training in a grocery store

Nay Tun is a 24 year old boy who comes from Myanmar (Burma). He came to Norway 1 1/2 year ago, and he lives with his mother and siblings, and studies Norwegian 5 days a week. Every Tuesday and Wednesday he works at Kiwi, one of Kongsbergs grocery stores. There are two main intentions with this work experience is for Nay Tun:
- to improve his oral skills in Norwegian
- to get work experience

Before he started to work in the shop, he understood basic Norwegian. We had a conversation about his future in Norway, where we discussed what types of work he believed he could handle. He wanted to have practice in a grocery store because he is a hard working young man, and he believed he could contribute positively in practical tasks like ware supplies and keeping the shop in order.

Ken, Nay Tuns boss at the grocery store, is very happy to have him there, and he claims that there is a good possibility that he might get a permanent job there in the future! Nothing is better than that, because it is not always easy for a foreigner to get a job in our country if he/she does not speak the language fluently.

Since Nay Tun 2 days a week is willing to be taught how to work in Kiwi, Ken has the possibility to test out how he functions at work. He can in other words give Nay Tun a trainee-period without having to pay any salary. This way we have a win-win situation; Kiwi does not have to pay any costs as long as the worker is a trainee, and on the other hand Nay Tun might end up with a job in the future.
